Birthday Celebrations

Three weeks ago things were pretty quiet, apart from the fact that we started remodelling on our kitchen. On Wednesday, our team went out to lunch at Raffi's for our intern Sooreen's goodbye lunch. After work I met up with Crystal, Jamie, and Keith at Los Gueros. I missed dinner but made it time for dessert and a margarita! On Thursday my mum and I grabbed breakfast at McD's before I had to go to work and we celebrated Lorraine's birthday at work. Happy Birthday Lola! And after work my mum and I went to Yong Dong Soondubu for dinner. On Friday we had breakfast at McD's again and by the time I returned from work our kitchen remodelling was finished. Yay! Too bad I'm not really happy with the work they did -_- Oh well. On Saturday Gardy and I went to Santa Anita Park for Katie's 3rd birthday party. It was Disney princess themed :)

On Sunday, I treated Krystal to Carnitas for her first time and then ran errands with my mum after church. I didn't go in to work on Tuesday because I had jury duty in downtown LA. Thank goodness I got excused at the end of the day! And it was cool because I got to check out Mendocino Farms for lunch. The rest of the week was pretty quiet and on Saturday I went to the dentist. It is great having insurance! And then we went to the optometrist to readjust my new glasses. In the evening, I picked up Jinwon and we went to C & O Trattoria for her birthday dinner. Delicious! Sunday was church, errands, and napping. The past week was pretty quiet apart from a couple WOW meetings. On Saturday I had lunch with my mum at McD's before meeting with our contractors regarding remodelling my bathroom. How exciting! And in the evening was Christina's birthday dinner at Masa of Echo Park! And there was an after party at Ron's apartment that involved yogurt soju, Apples to Apples, and Taboo ;) Yesterday Tricia treated us to ddukbokgi at church, but that didn't stop me from eating the meatball combo when my mum and I went to IKEA after. After some more errands and napping, we had our AHS Potluck at Crystal's house. Very successful potluck! For our apps/entrees we had: Chicken (Candace), Cobb Salad (Abby), Ribs + Kimchi Mac&Cheese (Christina), Chips with Wasabi Guacamole (Jason/Minda), and Shepherd's Pie (Christina). Christina and Ron also provided champagne and raspberries, while Elaine brought cherries. And for dessert, we had: Cheesecake Stuffed Peaches (Crystal), Crack Pie + White Chocolate Fruit Tart (Tiffany), and Mango Mochi Ice Cream (me, but we never actually ate it O.O). Good times :)

The Ragamuffin Gospel

Jury duty, it turns out, is good for one thing. It forced me to finally finish The Ragamuffin Gospel. My goodness, I started this book in April! It has taken me four months to finish it. *ashamed*

In my defense, I've been working since May. And we all know how low my energy level is when I work :P

Do you remember how I used to share all these passages with you from the book? Sadly, I only have a few passages that I bookmarked this time around. Blame it on the low energy level. I felt very strongly about these passages--they forced me to look at myself with a critical eye and, I have to say, I did not like what I saw. I still don't. I need to change, with God's help. Except... like the second passage I will share with you, I have been putting it off. And, like the third passage, I am a procrastinator. What does that say about me and my spiritual life?

Anyway, enough about me. Here are the passages I wanted to share with you. Hopefully you get something from reading these passages.

"The call asks, do you really accept the message that God is head over heels in love with you? I believe that this question is at the core of our ability to mature and grow spiritually. If in our hearts we really don't believe that God loves us as we are, if we are still tainted by the lie that we can do something to make God love us more, we are rejecting the message of the cross." (pg. 159)

"There is one barrier to love that deserves special mention because it is so crucial to the second call of Jesus Christ--fear. Most of us spend considerable time putting off the things we should be doing or we would like to do or we want to do--but are afraid to do. We are afraid of failure. We don't like it, we shun it, we avoid it because of our inordinate desire to be thought well of by others. So we come up with a thousand brilliant excuses for doing nothing. We put things off, waste the energies of life and love that are within us." (pg. 169)

"Procrastination is perhaps the worst, the most damaging failure of all. We who believe in Jesus, who hope in vindication, who proclaim the love of the heavenly Father, waste our time trying to avoid the things that are most important. How much faith, how much hope, how much love does the perpetual procrastinator really have?" (pg. 170)

I hope you have enjoyed my posts about The Ragamuffin Gospel. I'm not sure when I will start my next book, or even which one it will be (out of the large stack currently sitting on my bookshelf). But please stay tuned for when I do start it :)

Whimsical Weekend

I'm still sick, but that isn't stopping me from having fun!

So two Wednesdays ago, I met up with Jinwon after work to celebrate her birthday (belatedly). We had dinner at Spitz and then saw Les Miserables at Ahmanson. I had forgotten how good this musical was... SO GOOD! Jinwon and I are going to go see it again when it returns to SoCal next year. On Thursday our building (at work) held a "summer social" so I got some free sorbet, nice! After work our team had our first team event by going to see Dvor├ík’s "New World" at the Hollywood Bowl. Before we got there, I went to Porto's with a couple of coworkers to pick up food for the event. It was a lot of fun, even if we barely paid attention to the LA Philharmonic because we were too busy eating, drinking, and chatting. And Friday was cool because we had our monthly EA luncheon with food from Frontier Wok and Buttercelli Bakery. Since I was still under the weather, I spent most of Saturday in bed. On Sunday I took a nap after church and then took Judy out for her birthday dinner at Corner Bakery.

Last Monday I met up with Grace Yang after work for dinner at Granville Cafe. And afterwards we hung out at Coffee Bean, where I was sad to find out they don't have my favourite banana caramel drink anymore. Having run out of medicine and tired of coughing all the time, I finally went to the doctor on Thursday after leaving work early. I found a highly reviewed doctor in Pasadena and he wrote me scripts for cough syrups and antibiotics. Which probably weren't a good idea to take on an empty stomach since I threw up later that evening. But then on Friday I kept on feeling nauseous even though I made sure to eat a lot of food with my medicine, and the work day ended up with me forcing myself to throw up and going home early. Stopped by Rite Aid on my way home to talk to the pharmicist there and he recommended a different cough syrup for me since I was not doing well with this one (I blame the codeine). But that didn't stop me from meeting up with Jae and Debora yesterday to go see the Tim Burton exhibit at LACMA! It was really interesting to get this look into Tim Burton's mind. Afterwards we went to Larchmont Bungalow for lunch since I had a Groupon. Today Jinwon picked me up after church and we went to the mall for lunch. And afterwards we spent over three hours at Borders since they're having their closing sale. Ran some errands with my mum afterwards and now I'm going to end my weekend with some TV.

Summer X Games XVII

The Summer X Games have come and gone. I've been too sick and tired to even think about seeing any of it live on TV. Oh, my poor TV. I haven't turned that thing on in months.

Anyway, here's the usual recap video that I post:

And here are their top stories: Top X. Enjoy!
